Elizabeth Chatterton was born in 1866 in Birmingham – the daughter of carpenter Nathan Chatterton and Sarah Sherwin. (See 123 Sarah Chatterton)
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1877 on the “Waipa” and they lived in Dunedin until 1881 when they moved to East Gore.
Elizabeth married Francis Barber, a labourer from France, in 1883 and they had 12 children.
When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Chatton, near Gore.
Francis died in 1927 and Elizabeth died at her home on 22 August 1947 – they are buried together in the Gore Cemetery.
