Elizabeth Barwick was born about 1828 in London, England.

She came to New Zealand where she married James Hutton in 1864. What happened to James is unclear.

In 1884 Elizabeth married John Barnes, a contractor and widower, Elizabeth had been working for John as his housekeeper for several years before their marriage and was his fourth wife.

John died in 1889 and when Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition she was living in Forth St, Dunedin.

She died at her home on 24 July 1903 and is buried with John in the Southern Cemetery.
