Elizabeth Eleanor Gorton married Phillip Crum in 1880 and they lived in Ashburton. Information on her early years is lacking.

Phillip was the eldest son of John and Susannah Crum (she signed Sheet 290 of the petition).  Following on from his father, Phillip was a bricklayer and the Crum family were very involved in the construction industry, having migrated to New Zealand from the UK.

Elizabeth and Phillip had five children. Kate Ethel was born in 1881, Arthur John in 1883, Minnie Elizabeth in 1885, Mary Louise in 1887 and Ruby in 1892.

Elizabeth signed the Petition, Sheet 285, with her sister-in-law Mary Crum. Around this time Elizabeth and her family were living in Hampstead, Ashburton and they continued to live there into the new century.  However, their son Arthur who was a tailor, shifted to Wellington in his twenties. In 1910 The Wises Post Office Directory has Mrs Phillip Crum living on the 'LHS of Peter Street' in Ashburton but Phillip may have joined his son in Wellington to work in his trade as a bricklayer.

By 1911, Phillip, Elizabeth and Arthur were living together in Constable Street, Wellington South. Ruby was living with them in 1914, the year before she married.

Phillip died in 1925 and Elizabeth died in 1936 and she is buried in the Karori Cemetery. As a footnote, examples of her son Arthur’s exquisite craftsmanship are held in the Te Papa Collection. They were donated by Elizabeth’s daughter Ruby Carman.
