Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Drummond/Cumming was born on 4 July 1869 in Fowlis Wester, Perthshire, Scotland – the daughter of Christian Cumming and granddaughter of Elizabeth. (See 110 Mrs Elizabeth Cumming)

Elizabeth emigrated to Otago with her extended family in the early 1870s and they settled in Wairuna in South Otago where she signed the suffrage petition.

She married Douglas Ayson Strachan, a mill owner, on 18 October 1895 and they had four children before Douglas died suddenly in 1903 – a further child was born in 1906 about the time that Elizabeth moved to Christchurch.

She died on 14 December 1940 and is buried in the Sydenham Cemetery.
