Biographical information provided by Briar Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:
Born Eulalia Elizabeth Marquet on 27 August 1867 in Woolston, Christchurch but went by her middle name. Elizabeth’s parents had emigrated from Le Havre, Manche, Bassse-Normadie in France. In 1889 she married James Jeremiah Gatehouse with whom she had six children. They lived at 41 Victoria Terrace in Lyttelton, Christchurch. Elizabeth died 16 December 1953, aged 86.
