Elizabeth Pedden Lambie was born on 2 February 1856 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland – the daughter of William Lambie and Elizabeth Smith.
She married James Gault, a farm labourer, on 15 April 1873 in Kilmarnock and two days later they boarded the James Nicol Fleming bound for Canterbury, New Zealand.
The family settled in Dunedin and had eight children. When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Cutten St, St Kilda and James was working as a stoker.
James died at Millers Flat in Central Otago in 1927 and Elizabeth died on 25 March 1943 at her home in St Kilda.
They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
