Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Smith was born about 1860.

She married John Walker in 1880 and they had, at least, two children before John died in 1887, aged 36.

Elizabeth re-married in 1889 to William Burnham Goldsby and she had a further two children.

When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition she was living in Mataura where she was running a refreshment room.

Around this time William left the family after he had 'squandered away her property'.

Elizabeth applied for a divorce in 1910 which was granted.

William died in Greymouth in 1922 and is buried in the Karoro Cemetery.

Elizabeth died on 27 April 1935 – she is buried with John in the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.
