Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Elizabeth Sheffield was born on 16 December 1816 in Maulden, Bedfordshire, England – the daughter of Samuel Sheffield, a shoemaker, and Elizabeth.

She married George Hill, a grocer’s assistant, in 1845 and they had six children, one who died in infancy.

In 1860 the family emigrated to Otago on the “Storm Cloud” and they settled in Dunedin.

They were foundation members of the Hanover Street Baptist Church.

George died at their home in Heriot Row in 1867 and when Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition she was living with her daughter Ruth (See 167 Ruth Hill) in Cumberland Street.

Elizabeth died at her home on 22 September 1895 – she is buried with George in the Southern Cemetery.
