Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Elizabeth McCartney was born about 1860 in Ayrshire, Scotland – the daughter of James McCartney, a gardener, and Mary Paterson.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1861 on the Storm Cloud and they settled at Portobello on the Otago Peninsula.
Elizabeth married William McGill on 27 February 1879 at her parents’ home and they had eight children, one who died in infancy.
The family lived in Waikouaiti, north of Dunedin, before they moved to Dunedin in 1890 where William worked as a storeman.
When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Park Street, Kensington.
They later retired to Portobello where Elizabeth died on 3 August 1926 and William died in 1946 – they are buried together in the Portobello Cemetery.
