Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Carmichael was born about 1850 in Scotland.

In 1874 she emigrated to Otago on the Janet Court. On board, on 13 May, she met and married John McIntyre, a sailor working on the ship.

After the ship arrived in port the couple went to the Clinton area in South Otago where they farmed for a short time and their daughter Margaret was born in 1875. (See 65 Maggie McIntyre) They returned to Scotland about 1877 where their daughter Elizabeth was born about 1878 (See 65 Bessie McIntyre)

But 'being impressed with the free life of the colonies' they sailed for Queensland, Australia where Catherine was born in 1880.

They had returned to Dunedin by 1883 when their son John was born followed by Donald in 1888.

John worked at the Donaghy rope works as a carter and when Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family was living in Russell St, South Dunedin – now known as Fox St.

Elizabeth died suddenly of a heart attack at their home on 31 July  1909 and John died in 1918, they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
