Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.
Elizabeth Calder was born about 1830 in Scotland – the eldest daughter of “the late John Calder, of Lybster, Caitness”.
She emigrated to New Zealand where she married Angus McMillan, a farmer and widower with five children, on 29 March 1861 in Dunedin.
Elizabeth and Angus had three children and when Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Taieri Rd, Halfway Bush.
Angus died in 1898 and Elizabeth died at her son’s home in Herbert in North Otago on 8 November 1898 – they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
