Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Elizabeth Ann Rhodes was born in 1871 in Leeds, England – the daughter of North Rhodes, a wool dyer, and Mary Pybus.
In 1887 she sailed for New Zealand on the Arawa accompanied by her brother Jonathan and his wife Rosetta. (See 163 Rosetta Rhodes)
When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition she was living with Jonathan and Rosetta in Hope Rd, North East Valley in Dunedin working as a shop assistant.
She married Alexander Ritchie, a saddler, on 21 July 1897 and they had 10 children.
Alexander died in 1941 and Elizabeth died at her home on 22 September 1950 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
