Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Carter was born about 1843 in Lancashire, England.

She married Thomas Sunderland, a tinplate worker, in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1866.

They had five children, one who died in infancy, before Thomas emigrated to Otago in 1879 on the Taranaki

Elizabeth and the children followed in 1883 on the Caroline and they settled in Dunedin.

When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family were living in School St, Roslyn.

Thomas died in 1908 and Elizabeth died at her son’s home in Dunedin on 22 October 1918 – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
