Ellen Bateman was born Ellen Wise on 24 July 1857, Chertsey, Surrey, England to William Wise and Eliza Chitty.

Ellen married on 8 July 1880 in New Zealand to James Stephen Henry Bateman, son of Henry Bateman and Ellen Strudwick. James was a Bricklayer.

Ellen and James had six children; Annie Elizabeth born 1881, Henry Charles born 1883, John William born 1885, Frederick Strudwick born 1887, Victoria, Australia, Edith Henrietta born 1890 born Victoria, Australia and Arthur George born 1892.

The New Zealand Electoral Roll for 1896 records Ellen and James living in Waimate. From 1911–1919 Ellen was living in Oxford Street, Waimate. In 1919 Ellen moved to the Manawatu and the 1919 Electoral Roll records her living in Sheehan Street, Shannon.

James died on 12 September 1909 in Waimate and is buried in the Waimate Old cemetery, Methodist section, Plot 0015ME000429.

Ellen died on 27 November 1922 in Palmerston North age 65 years. She is buried in the Terrace End cemetery, Block 050, Plot Location 020.

Ellen’s sister-in-law Henrietta Bateman also signed the Petition.
