Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Ellen Dougall was born in 1868 in New Zealand – the daughter of John Alexander Dougall, a Master Mariner and Elizabeth Lawrence.
The Dougall family lived on Quarantine Island in the Otago Harbour where John was the ‘Keeper of Quarantine’ and presumably where Ellen was born.
Three of her 5 siblings died on the island and her father also died there in 1890 – they are all buried in the cemetery on Quarantine Island.
When Ellen signed the suffrage petition, she was living in London St, Dunedin.
She married labourer, Charles William Newton, on April 16th 1894 on Quarantine Island.
They had 3 children and lived in Akaroa.
Ellen died in Christchurch on February 14th 1950 and Charles died in 1953 – they appear to have been cremated.
