Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Ellen Slater was born about 1853 in England. She married James Eden, an engineer, in 1879 and that same year they emigrated to Victoria, Australia on the Afghan.
They appear to have travelled to New Zealand soon after as their son Sydney was born in late 1879 in New Zealand.
They settled, at first, in Christchurch and had a daughter in 1888.
When Ellen signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Royal Terrace, Caversham, Dunedin and James was working as manager of the railway workshops.
In the early 1900s the family went to Australia – Ellen died in Western Australia on 23 April 1928.
She is buried with her son in the Karrakatta Cemetery, Nedlands City, Western Australia.
James’ place and date of death are unknown.
