Ellen O’Neill was born about 1862 in Summerhill, County Waterford, Ireland.

She arrived in New Zealand about 1870 and married Michael Keyes, a cab proprietor, in 1886.

They had eight children and, when Ellen signed the suffrage petition, they were living in Bay View Rd, Dunedin.

Michael died at their home in 1915 and Ellen died on 29 June 1943, they are buried with two of their sons in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
