Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Ellen Luffman was born in 1845 in North Cheriton, Somertshire – the daughter of William Luffman, an agricultural labourer, and Mary Ann Biggen.

She married Charles Slade, a gardener, in 1867 and they had four children before they emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Peter Denny.

They had a further two children in Dunedin, who both died in infancy. Charles died in 1876 – he is buried in the Southern Cemetery.

Ellen re-married in 1878 to Frank Mace, a hammerman.

They had five children and when Ellen signed the suffrage petition they were living in Vogel St, South Dunedin.

Ellen died at her home on 11 August 1905 and Frank died in 1930 – they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
