Ellen Thyne was born Ellen Miniter to Laurence Miniter and his wife Bridget Carmody on 22 February 1828, County Clare, Ireland.
Ellen married Martin Thyne in Ireland. They had seven children, all born in Ireland.
Around 1875 Martin, Ellen and family migrated to New Zealand.
The 1881 electoral roll for Waimate records Martin Thyne, Dairyman, Freehold property of one acre, part rural section 7079, Waimate.
Martin died on 19 March 1890, age 80 years and is buried in the Waimate Old cemetery, Roman Catholic section, Plot 000607.
The 1893, 1896 and 1911 electoral rolls all record Ellen living in Waimate. She was a widow.
In 1896 Ellen had sixty acres, rural sections 1397, 1398 and 1739, Block V, Waimate Survey District.
Ellen died on 12 October 1917 in Waimate, aged 90 years and is buried with her husband in the Waimate Old cemetery.
Following her death, Guinness & LeCren Ltd sold by auction on 15 December 1917, Town sections situated in Rhodes street and Freehold farm of 136 acres situated at Upper Hook.
