Biography contributed by Kattherine Blakeley

Ellen Herring was born in 1865 in Wye, Kent, England – the daughter of Sarah Herring.

Her mother married William Tucker in 1867 and Ellen used the name Tucker after this.

Ellen emigrated to Otago with her family in 1879 on the Stadt Haarlem and they settled in Dunedin.

Ellen had a daughter in 1882 – a maintenance case came before the court ordering George Lock to contribute towards the child’s support until she was 14.

When Ellen signed the suffrage petition she was living with her parents in Richmond Rd, Caversham.

On 6 November 1895 Ellen married farmer Charles Higgins. They had six children and farmed at Hindon before moving to Mosgiel where Charles died in 1918.

Ellen remained in Mosgiel where she died on 23 July 1927 – she is buried with Charles in the East Taieri Cemetery.
