Ellen Workman Shanks was born about 1848 in Scotland. 

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1849 on the Kelso and they settled in Halfway Bush, Dunedin. 

In the 1860s they moved to the Mataura district where Ellen signed the suffrage petition and she worked as a seamstress. 

Ellen died on 16 September 1912 in Dunedin – she is buried with her brother and sister in the Mataura Cemetery.
