Ellen Franklin was born in 1858 in York – the daughter of Thomas Franklin, a railway porter, and Ann Leaf.
When she emigrated to Otago in 1883 on the Victory her occupation was schoolmistress.
She married Henry White, a news agent, the following year and they had four children.
When Ellen signed the suffrage petition they were living in Lawrence St, Mornington, Dunedin.
Their only son died while fighting in in France during the First World War.
Henry died in 1931 and Ellen died on 28 June 1953 – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
