Biographical information provided by Susanna Joe for the He Tohu exhibition:

Elspet Bremner (known as Elsie), the oldest daughter of Scottish immigrants William and Eliza Bremner (nee Cook) was born on 27 February 1858 in Adelaide, Australia and named after her paternal grandmother. By 1861 the family was living in Waikoikoi, Otago where William was a farmer.

On 17 March 1885 Elsie married John Drew Atkin Jr, the son of Irish immigrants John and Rebecca Atkin. John was Australia-born but the Atkin family had settled in Tapanui, where John worked with his father in their carrying business. The couple’s first child was stillborn in 1885, but six more children followed: Francis (1887-1966), Eliza (1888-1982), Rebecca (1890-1978), Margaret (1893-1929), Elizabeth (1895-1989) and Christopher (1897-1985).

Elsie lived the rest of her life in Tapanui and was buried in Tapanui Cemetery after her death on 10 May 1942, aged 84.
