Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Elsie Grant was born in Scotland in the 1860s.
The information she gave on her husband’s probate records say she was born in Granton on Spey.
She married James Reid, a bootmaker in New Zealand in 1879 and they had three children.
When Elsie signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Mataura.
Their youngest son died in 1917 and their eldest son died the following year fighting in WW1.
James died in Invercargill in 1919 – he is buried in the Mataura Cemetery.
After James’ death Elsie moved to Timaru where her daughter Susanna was living.
Elsie remained in Timaru until her death on 29 June 1950 – she is buried with her daughter and granddaughter in the Timaru Cemetery.
