Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elspeth Lamond was born about 1840 in Perthshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Lamond, a shepherd, and Mary.

She emigrated to Otago with her family, arriving in 1858, on the Robert Henderson.

After a short stay in Dunedin the family settled in Waitepeka in South Otago.

Elspeth married Adam Sutherland, a shepherd, in 1868 and they had two children before Adam died suddenly in 1870.

When Elspeth signed the suffrage petition she was living in Waitepeka with her two children John and Kate. (See 106 Kate Sutherland)

Elspeth died at her home on 25 June 1908, she is buried with Adam in the Warepa Cemetery.

Her obituary said the 'Christian training which she had received in her early days was her comfort and stay during her long period of widowhood and late illness. She was of a cheerful, though quiet and retiring disposition, which endeared her to all who had the privilege of her acquaintance.'
