Emily Ann Grindley was born in 1865 in Clyde, Central Otago, the daughter of William Grindley, a butcher, and Mary Ann Pritchard.
Emily did not marry. When she signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Albany St, Dunedin. Her mother, Mary Grindley, also signed the petition.
In 1892, she was awarded an award for passing the St Johns Ambulance Association first aid examination.
Emily died on 4 September 1939. She is buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
