Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Emily Underwood was born in 1850 in Cambridge, England – the daughter of Frederick Charles Underwood, a tailor, and Martha Hull Pettit.

She married John Horner in 1874 in London and soon after they emigrated to Wellington on the Soukar.

In 1887 John obtained the licence for the Hampden Hotel. After he died in 1890 Emily took over the licence which she held until 1906.

She signed the suffrage petition in Hampden and she died in Oamaru on 7 June 1941 and is buried with John in the Oamaru Old Cemetery.
