Jemima Emily Twatt/Watt was born on 1 June 1860 in Walls, Shetland, Scotland – the daughter of William Twatt and Lillias Williamson.
She emigrated to New Zealand and she married Edward Ezra Houghton, a fireman, in 1890.
They had one son and when Emily signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Queen St, Dunedin.
Emily died at her home 'Aldred Cottage', Queen St on 30 April 1894 – she is buried in the Northern Cemetery.
Edward re-married in 1901, his second wife died the following year and he again re-married in 1905.
Edward died in 1939, he is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
