Emily Birnie Guthrie was born about 1853 in Scotland.

She married John Wilson Rigby on 10 December 1875 in Aberdeen and they emigrated to Otago shortly after their marriage.

They settled in Dunedin where John worked as a painter and they had 10 children.

When Emily signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Maori Hill, Dunedin.

She died at her home on 23 October 1924 and John died in 1932, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
