Biographical information provided by Helen Smith for the He Tohu exhibition:
Rose was born in Slough, Gloucestershire (England) around 1865 to an Anglican vicar and his wife, who later immigrated to New South Wales, Australia. After their parents died Rose and her brothers, Rev. Allen Francis Gardiner and Thomas Henry (Reginald) Gardiner, returned to England to be raised by relatives, but eventually came back to New Zealand. Between 1896-1900 Rose lived in Te Aute, Hawke’s Bay, and by 1911 she had settled in Havelock North. She was Branch Secretary of the Girls’ Friendly Society and with her brothers was heavily involved in church work. She died in 1947, aged 82.
