Emily Hitchcox was born in 1861 in Oxfordshire, England – the daughter of Arthur Hitchcox, an agricultural labourer, and Lydia Stockford.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Scimitar and they settled in Dunedin.
Emily married Charles Town Williams, a carpenter, in 1883 and they had five children.
Charles was declared bankrupt in 1891 and when Emily signed the suffrage petition the family were living in the suburb of Mornington.
Emily died on 26 July 1933 - she is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
Charles died the following year in Palmerston, north of Dunedin – he is also buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
