Emma Hayward was born about 1860.

She married shepherd Charles Henderson on 5 December 1879 in Dunedin and they had eight children.

Charles died in 1891 when Emma was newly pregnant with their last child – he is buried in the Gore Cemetery.

A subscription was taken to assist Emma which raised £83 10s 6d.

Emma signed the suffrage petition at East Gore.

In 1911 Baxter Buckley a popular pianist and music teacher, arrived in Gore. Emma and Baxter married in 1911 and they left for Wellington in early 1912.

They travelled to Australia in 1913 then, in 1915, they sailed for England where Baxter planned to 'study under Signor Ferruccio Busoni'. They returned to Wellington the following year. Baxter died in 1920 'following an operation' – he is buried in the Karori Cemetery.

Emma died on 19 July 1931 in Christchurch – she is buried in the Bromley Cemetery.
