Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Emma Jane Stone was born about 1846, probably in England.

She emigrated to New Zealand and she married Henry William Kerr, a blacksmith and coachbuilder, in 1872.

They had nine children and when Emma signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Kaitangata.

In the 1900s the family moved to Te Puke where Henry died in 1914.

Emma died at her home on 11 May 1916, she is buried with Henry in the Old Te Puke Cemetery.

Her obituary said she 'was universally esteemed, and her demise will be regretted by a large circle of friends.'
