Biographical information provided by Lillie Le Dorré, for the He Tohu exhibition:
Ernestine Winifred Kropp was born on 16 October 1867, to parents Ernest Frederick and Winifred Kropp (nee O’Malley). Ernestine was the eldest of four; sisters Lois Frederika and Elizabeth Rosina were born in 1869 and 1871 respectively. A brother, Ernest Frederick was born in 1877.
Ernestine won a prize for writing at the end of the school year in 1878. She attended North East Valley District School, along with her sisters. The prizes were given out by the Mayor of the district, Mr Schlotel.
1891 was a tragic year for the Kropp family. Ernestine’s sister Lois died, aged 21 year, and another sister, Elizabeth, gave birth to a daughter, Fredericka, out of wedlock. The child was committed to an Industrial School in 1892, and later adopted (1896).
Ernestine worked in domestic service, and never married. On 24 January 1952, Ernestine died, aged 84. She was buried in Dunedin’s Northern Cemetery.
