Esther Garraway was born about 1845, possibly in England.

She married William Carr, a whipmaker, in Victoria, Australia in 1865. They had a son in Victoria before sailing for New Zealand.

The family settled in Dunedin and had a further eight children, three who died in infancy.

The family lived in Dowling St, Dunedin where Esther signed the suffrage petition.

William died in 1909 and Esther died on 12 January 1923, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
