Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Esther King was born about 1834 in Kings Stanley, Gloucestershire.

She married William Fullarton Young, a book agent, in Cheltenham in 1863 and they had four children.

In 1873 the family emigrated to Otago on the Lady Jocelyn – their two youngest children died on the voyage from diptheria and were buried at sea.

The family settled in Palmerston in North Otago where their son Frank was born in 1878 and where William worked as a blacksmith.

They later moved to Dunedin where Esther signed the suffrage petition in Forth Street.

Esther died at her son’s home in Gore on 29 June 1914 and William died in 1921 – they are buried together in the Gore Cemetery.
