Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Ethel Lily Adelaide Lockley was born in 1867 in New Zealand – the daughter of Evelyn Lockley, a publican, and Louisa Jane Cockle.

Her father died in 1876 and her mother died in 1881.

Ethel married painter William Sutcliffe in 1886 and they had a daughter before William’s death in September 1887.

Their son was born in February the following year when a 'concert and dance in aid of the widow of the late William Sutcliffe was held in the Forbury Rinking Hall'.

Ethel remarried on 24 April 1889 at her sister’s home in South Dunedin to Matthew Gentle Allan, a grocer’s assistant.

Ethel and Matthew had three children and when she signed the suffrage petition they were living in Braemar St, South Dunedin.

They later lived in Timaru and Feilding where Ethel died on 16 August 1901 – she is buried in the Feilding Cemetery.

Matthew returned to Dunedin where he died in 1927 – he is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
