Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaretta (Etta) Black Coupar was born in New Zealand in 1872 – the daughter of James Coupar, an aerated water and cordial manufacturer, and Mary Ann Atkinson.

Her family lived in Waikouaiti later shifting to Dunedin in about 1890.

On 22 January 1896 Margaretta married Robert Drysdale Jack at the St Luke’s Presbyterian Church, Sydney, Australia. They settled in New Zealand and had three children.

Robert Jack died suddenly while playing cricket in 1923, and Margaretta Jack died on 30 July 1957. They are buried together in the Port Chalmers cemetery.

Margaretta was a strong supporter of the suffrage petition, signing it three times.
