Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Euphan Nicol was born in 1861 in New Zealand – the daughter of Robert Nicol and Margaret Cameron.
She grew up in Hokitika where she married postman, George Henry Clarkson, on 1 January 1879 at All Saints Church.
They had 15 children, one who died in infancy, and when Euphan signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Greymouth.
They moved to Dunedin in 1896 and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1929 with a 'wedding breakfast'. After the speeches 'supper was partaken of, after which dancing was continued till midnight'.
Euphan died in Dunedin on 25 February 1935 and George died in 1938 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
