Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Fanny Mary Anne Jane Stronach was born in 1870 in New Zealand – the daughter of Donald Stronach, a farmer and merchant, and Sarah Mary Anne Legrand Brooks. She attended Otago Girls High School and the Dunedin Technical School and when she signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Cliffs Road, St Clair.

She trained as a nurse at the Dunedin Hospital and, for seven years, ran the Stronach Private Hospital in Dunedin.

In 1904 she moved to Oamaru and two years later she and her sister Annie opened a private hospital there.

Fanny died in Oamaru on 5 October 1934 – she is buried in the Old Oamaru Cemetery with her sister Annie.
