Fanny Arundel was born in 1848 in Sheffield, England – the daughter of George Arundel, a plumber and innkeeper, and Mary Ann Aldred.
She married shoemaker Isaac Richard Carter in 1869 and they emigrated to Otago in 1878 on the Inglewood.
Isaac was declared bankrupt in 1882 and they had seven children, two who died in early childhood.
When Fanny signed the suffrage petition they were living in Mechanic St, North East Valley.
Around this time Isaac purchased the Royal Hotel in Naseby which was kept until 1899.
Isaac died in Dunedin in 1908 and Fanny died on 2 August 1909 – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
