Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Fanny Tripp was born in 1852 in Oxfordshire, England – the daughter of William Tripp, an agricultural labourer, and Hannah Newman.

Fanny had two children – Hannah in 1869 and Charles in 1872.

In 1873 Fanny emigrated to Otago on the Mongol accompanied by her widowed father and three brothers.

The voyage was plagued with sickness especially scarlet fever, measles and bronchitis. The ship arrived in February 1874 and anchored at Quarantine Island.

Fanny’s son Charles died on the island from bronchitis – he is buried on Quarantine Island.

Fanny married John Ewart, an engine driver, on 8 September 1876 in the West Taieri Parish – they had nine children and when Fanny signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Sydney St, Caversham.

John died in 1897 and Fanny died at her home on 14 October 1929 – they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
