Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Fanny Quarry Hodgetts was born in New Zealand in 1870 – the daughter of Richard Hodgetts, a cabman, and Marian Quarry.

She married James Arthur Martin, a labourer, in 1911 – they had two daughters. In August 1921 Fanny applied for maintenance, separation and guardianship orders on the grounds of 'wilful failure to maintain'. One month later James was charged with disobedience of the order: 'The defendant’s wife was suffering from a serious disease, and defendant had done nothing to help her.'

James was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, to be released on payment of the arrears.

Fanny died on 14 July 1934 at her home in George St, Dunedin – she is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.

James died in 1950, he is buried in the Northern Cemetery.
