Fanny Louisa Minn (registered as Ann Letitia) was born in 1855 in Yarnton, Oxfordshire, England, the daughter of David Minn, a railway labourer, and Louisa Casbourne.

The family emigrated to Wellington in 1874 on the Soukar  and had moved to Dunedin by the 1880s.

Fanny married Donald Gillies, a blacksmith, in 1877. They had nine children.

Donald was declared bankrupt in 1881. He died in the Dunedin Hospital in 1899 when their youngest child was seven years old.

Fanny died on 23 June 1949, aged 95. She is buried in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin with three of her daughters.
