Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Fanny Gretton was born in 1852 in Derbyshire, England – the daughter of Ebenezer Gretton, a frame work knitter, and Mary Bates.

Her father died in 1854 and she came to New Zealand a few years later.

Fanny married John MacKenzie, a meat preserver, on 13 October 1868 at Knox Church, Dunedin.

They had 11 children, two who died in infancy, and when Fanny signed the suffrage petition they were living in May Bank in North East Valley.

John died at their home in 1907 apparently 'as the ultimate result of injuries sustained while working' at the St George canning factory.

Fanny made a claim for compensation through the arbitration court – she was granted £175.

Fanny died on 22 July 1923 – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
