Fanny Grundy was born in 1856 in Lincolnshire, England – the daughter of Joseph Grundy, a foreman, and Hannah Brinkell.

She emigrated to New Zealand in the 1870s and married David Nicol, a bookseller, on 2 January 1877 in Dunedin.

They had 12 children, two who died in infancy and when Fanny signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Campbell St, Mornington.

Fanny died on 2 May 1915 and David died in December of the same year, they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
