Fanny Troy

Fanny Morgan Troy (30 January 1835 - 25 November 1910) was the daughter of Julia Peach Morgan and brewer Henry Morgan of Somerset, England. She married Michael Joseph Patrick Troy (1820-1910) in 1863, a private in the 65th Foot Regiment stationed in Napier. She was the founding secretary for the Napier WCTU when it was formed on 11 June 1885 by Mary Clement Leavitt. She then became the founding recording secretary of the WCTU NZ at the February 1886 convention in Wellington. In 1893 she was elected treasurer for the WCTU NZ as well as the national superintendent for the social purity department. Kate Sheppard thanked her publicly at that year's national convention in March for the crucial work she had done in gathering signatures for the suffrage petitions of 1891 and 1892 - and one can see her signature here on the 1893 "monster petition" where she also witnessed for those women unable to write their own names. She continued to serve as national treasurer as well as the local Napier Union president and secretary over the years. After her husband died at 90 years of age, she became ill and died only a few months after him.
