Florence Ada Usherwood was born in 1869 in London, England – the daughter of Henry James Usherwood, a jeweller’s assistant, and Mary Ann Yates. (See 43 Mary Ann Usherwood)

She emigrated to Otago in 1883 on the Tongariro with her family and they settled in Dunedin.

When Florence signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Forbury Rd, St Clair.

She married Robert Arthur Mathewson, a sharebroker, on 27 July 1904 at the Congregational Church, Moray Place.

They had six children – Robert died in 1924 when he drowned while swimming at Warrington Beach, north of Dunedin, their youngest child was nine-years-old.

Florence died on 2 June 1961, at the age of 91. They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
