Biographical information provided by Kate Potter for the He Tohu exhibition:

Florence Louisa Carrington was born in Middlesex, England in 1864, the fifth child of George Peter Carrington and the first child of George’s second wife-to-be, Lucie Florence Carrington. George and Lucie were married in 1866, and sometime after 1873 they and their five children migrated to New Zealand. Lucie passed away in Stoke, Nelson in 1881, aged 37.

Florence Louisa married Frederick John Howorth in 1884 and the pair had two daughters. At the time of the petition, Florence was working as a dressmaker and living at a different address to Frederick; subsequent electoral rolls suggest the pair remained separated. In 1907 Frederick was granted a divorce on the grounds of desertion. Two months later, Florence gave away her daughter Ruby in a quiet but pretty marriage ceremony.

Florence died in Wellington in 1933 aged 69. Her obituary describes her as a woman loved by all who came into contact with her and noted that her talent and charm had made her well known in Dunedin music circles.
