Biographical information provided by Stefanie Lash for the He Tohu exhibition:
Frances Barnes, daughter of William and Harriet Barnes, arrived in New Zealand in 1841 at the age of 12. She had been born in Cranbrook, Kent. Her parents were some of the first European settlers in Wellington.
Frances married Joseph Fry in 1849. They had one child, Martha. The Frys set up their farm at Blackbridge, Lower Hutt. Shortly after Frances was widowed in 1888 she sold all of her furniture, household effects and farm implements. Frances lived to the age of 90, dying in 1921.
